No CDL required here (Washington). I think you only need a CDL for combinations or if working for hire, but I could be wrong. Anyway nobody asked me, and I got stopped by a trooper once before I'd put the plates on it. He said it looked like an army truck but I didn't look like an army guy. He checked all my papers and called it in and had no problem with my (non-CDL) driver's license.
