I agree its generally lye based. I use lye from the grocery to strip paint off parts all the time. I keep it in a barrel. My father (70+ tells me that they used to mix it with a bit of corn starch to get it to stick and would paint it on.) It don't work on too well on newer paints but anything back twenty years or so is gonna come off. If you can heat it up it strips paint even better. It will flat eat up aluminum
