With both tires off the ground you will get a true reading. With only one tire off the ground you have to multiply the driveshaft revolutions by 2. Because of the differential action, all of the motion is being sent to the one wheel and the number or revolutions are being doubled in the process.

If, however, you happened to have a locker in the differential case, having either one tire or both off of the ground would produce a true reading either way. To do this though you would have to be driving the driveshaft with the wheel, not the wheel with the driveshaft. The dog clutch would simply ratchet past the stationary side gear connected to the stationary axle shaft and wheel.

You have 5.83:1 ratio gears in your rear axle assembly.
