A short unit made to bolt directly to the transfercase (replacing the bearing flange and yoke)would seem to be the easiest way to go. If a short unit that bolted directly to the tranny were used, it might be possible to keep the original shortshaft by moving the transfercase back which would require both dr.shafts to be modified(hopefully to the same length). After Ray shows us how he centered the carrier on the offset axles, some may convert to a centered carrier and need a t-case mounted unit designed for the pk-brake side.
OD units run from the $1800-3000 range from what I've seen, a luxury for your average joe. Personally I hope you just want one for yourself and only hope to cover the cost of production, thus allowing many to afford one if possible.
I have one possible alternative to the OD issue. Gather as many of the 5spd std NP trannies as possible and convert them to the 5spd OD version(if its possible). I can't recall its #, but it was a NP5-- and should use the same bolt pattern as the NP420. Just an idea. best-O-luck on whatever you build.
