The split rims can in fact be dangerous. Everyone has a horror tale to tell, usually second or third hand. Having said that if you use some common sense to dismount, inspect and mount there's no reason you can't do it yourself. I also have done many of these over the years, and (knock on wood), have never had an accident. Key word here is safety. Biggest problem I've ran into is getting the tires off the rim. Most tire shops now days won't even touch them because of the liability issue. I believe the reputation of the rims is similar to a pitbull. I'd say go ahead and have someone who is familiar with these give you a hand so you can learn how, in time we'll be the only ones that use them and know how. If you don't have access to a cage, and if you remember nothing else, NEVER EVER reinflate one of these with the safety ring facing up. It must go down or there is a very good possibility you'll become one of the ugly statistics. As Dennis Miller is fond of saying "Of course that's just my opinion and I could be wrong"
