Gun setup seems to be the critical element. I always try to watch when spraying is being done and the setup used by professionals seems to result in a finer spray than I would expect.
Basically, after the pressure is set, the gun is run with a full wide open, or nearly so, pattern. Adequate pressure and a wide pattern give the fine spray necessary to get the product to flow.
Unfortunately, being amateurs, we learn by trial and error which causes a lot of work.
