yup many tried to win that class of vehicles contract but Dodge easily won out. they had a huge head start in 4x4 building and they invented the disengagable Tcase. problem with the fords off road is the V8 distributor is the first thing to get soaked in heavy rain or fording. And they were unreliable for other reasons one being the oil seal on the dist would leak on to the points killing the engine. And working on ford V8s is very time consuming compared to the inline 6. Also the dodge 6 had lots more HP than the ford V8. better low end torque as well.
