I like that it has a chain rather than a belt, so less chance of catastrophic failure. It was actually a one-owner rig, bought new or nearly so and I know the engine has never been replaced. From the looks of it, the valves had never been adjusted either. One of the first things I did was set the valves, which just by itself cured the problem of it backfiring under compression coming down a steep hill. I doubt the timing cover has been off, so probably something worth looking into. On the other hand, it's still a 300,000 mile truck with lots of rough spots, including rust-through on the top of the frame by the gas tank where mud packed in, and compression getting down into the 120 range. Interior plastic stuff is all pretty deteriorated, etc., so not worth putting a lot of money into. But if I have some other reason to get into the front of the motor, I'll definitely replace that tensioner. Is there any chance you can check it somewhat from the outside, like on a honda? This one could be an '84 or an '85. The VIN number comes up as an '85 but the door post plate says '84. I'm calling it an '84 because when I got some '85 inside door handles for it, they didn't fit, but '84 handles did.
