Most of the buses down in Central
America are (as you know)old American school buses. I think school buses in some locations in the U.S., probably in the mountainous areas, are required to have some sort of brake retarder.
Jake brakes and exhaust brakes are commonly used, however, with the higher exhaust temperatures in newer diesels, exhaust brakes may cause maintenance problems and Jake brakes are noisy.
A third kind of braking device is called a retarder. Either hydraulic or electromagnetic, they attach to the drive shaft and provide additional braking. One brand of electromagnetic device is made by "Telma" if you want to look it up.
