that's probably too close, an inch or more is better as when the tires are vertical and a load applied you will have sidewalls rubbing each other and will cause heating and eventual tire failure. Most duals as used on big trucks and the older trucks depend on the indexing of the rim by the lugs and lug nuts, dodge rims during the 60s and 70s had the holes beveled one inward and one outward around the circumference (on Trucks with smaller studs like the D&W series) This way the rims did bear upon each other and the bevel offsets allowed the lug nuts to be drawn down tight self aligning the rims to each other. (one lug nut holding both rims) Most used a raised boss or centering tabs cast and machined on the hub to keep the rims aligned and bear the load. GM had a pin in the hub to locate the rims at the proper place. In nay case, full contact of the rims to each other as well as the hub is imperative for full load bearing, the lugs / nuts are not designed to bear the full operating load by themselves.
