Paul has done that on at least two of his conversions to make the non-stock transfer case work with the stock axles, but I would agree with Kaegi. The amount of surface area vs a disk is so much greater that the band should honestly work as well or better.

Heck, even today a lot of cars with rear disks use small integral drum brakes hidden inside the rotor for the e-brake on the rear axles.
