A lot of us are spoiled by our access to good machine shops and the wherewithal to afford them.
Gil, the vale job you are doing was done by hundreds of people in roadside camps during the Dust bowl migration. Many made there own lapping compound out of frying pan grease and sand filtered through an old set of women's stockings.
Persevere and at the other end you will be amazed at what you've accomplished.
