After you lapped the valves, is there a continuous ring of polished metal around the valve and valve seat?
It doesn't sound like you had the valve seats re-ground, so I'm not surprised the valves leak.
But, before I gave up, since you have done so much work, I would put the head on and do a compression check. You say you would be satisfied if the engine would just run for awhile, so why not?
Did you replace the valve guides like you said?
