Sorry, I missed you message about how a fuel pump test is done.

I agree, replacing the fuel pump is a good idea (and probably everything else in the fuel system too).

I'm not knocking the "parts changer" method of automobile repair. It's a tried and true method. It's just that you really never know if you have solved the problem unless you identified the problem in the first place and changing out good parts can get expensive.

As it is now, even though the truck is running, you don't have enough confidence to drive it very far from home. Six thousand pound non-running Power Wagons can be very difficult to get back home.

Two things are important on a fuel pump: pressure and volume. Fuel pressure/vacuum gauges are cheap and every shade tree mechanic should have one. As has been stated by others, pressure should be around 3-5 lbs, but the other part of the equation is volume. If a pump makes 3 lbs of static pressure, but doesn't deliver much volume, it won't do you any good.

Shade tree mechanic test: Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump and place the end in a can. Have someone crank the engine (ignition off or disabled} while you watch at the can. The fuel should come out in good strong spurts. For safety reasons, do this outside.

There are devices that check fuel flow and pressure at the same time. But, if anybody has one, I'm jealous.

Let us know how it goes. We all gain a little satisfaction and knowledge when someone here solves solves their problem.
