Disconnect the coil lead, and crank it. If there is no discernible rhythm, valves are good. If you do hear rhythm, do a dry compression test. You can hear a variation in compression that is only 5 psi, harmless.

Suction at the tail pipe is meaningless. That is all in the harmonics of rpm vs length of pipe, etc.

Have you tired a known good coil? Or checked the coil polarity?

Chevy small blocks do wear cam lobes until flat, if you get that far crank it with rocker covers off, and look for rockers that don't rock very much. Won't show on a compression test.
