Treated lumber is often "green" when it is treated. Meaning it is not kiln dry. I would imagine the lumber John bought is also "green", not kiln dried. Home Depot likely doesn't sell kiln dried lumber in order to be more competitive. They also sell inferior grades that are not a structurally sound.
