I probably shouldn't let the secret out or there won't be any more cheap 3-phase stuff at auctions, but these days VFDs (variable frequency drives) are so cheap that at least for low power motors (up to 1 or 2 hp) it's worth getting the VFD just as a phase converter. If there's any chance you might want to change the speed of the motor, like if it runs shop tools or a pump, then you get that automatically with the VFD. At the low-power end, most VFDs will take a single-phase input. They all generate a 3-phase output, usually at 240 volts.
