I replaced a seal on a Ford 390 about 100 years ago with a kit that allowed doing it without removing the flywheel, etc. It had a little gizmo that slipped over the seal, which was about 5 or 6" long. As you pulled on the seal this thing tightened and pulled it around the crank, then you trimmed it as tight as you could make it. Mine stopped leaking oil and never leaked again, while I owned it.
