I guess it depends on one's level of thoroughness. I've had many heads off, but only one timing cover, and have yet to replace a distribution tube, even though I probably should. But then all I'm trying to do is get an engine running well enough to be usable, but "restore" it. I took one head off just to drill out the temperature sender hole bigger -- easier to take the head into the shop than try to drill and tap it on the truck.
