Unless the engine has been apart sometime in the last few decades, we all go down the same path which eventually leads to taking apart the front of the engine to clean the cooling system, replace or clean the distribution tube and replace the leaking crank seal and pan gaskets. That's just the way it is.

One job leads to another in a never ending procession until every moving part has been replaced or renewed. I'm guessing that a truck that has stuck valves is going to need the whole works.

But, buy gaskets piece by piece, that's fine with me. Maybe, you won't need so many gaskets that it would have been cheaper and easier to just buy the set. After all, "hope springs eternal in the breast of man". Otherwise, we wouldn't be buying 60 year old trucks that have been sitting for 20 years and expect that we can get them running with new plugs and an oil change.
