I've got a friend in CA that's contacted CA hwy patrol & he's getting to the bottom of the data tag issue for us.
You see in many years, data tags didn't exist. Then someone decided it would be a good idea to screw a tag on the door jam with the vehicles specs & VIN number, to make it easier to identify rather than clambering around under a fender looking for frame numbers.
A guy could throw the tag away & in 95% of states & countries it didn't matter, so long as the number on the chassis matched the Title. It's my understanding that the "Tampering with Data Tag" laws pertain to unibody vehicles where the data tag "is" the Chassis number.
On many vintage vehicles, data tags are affixed to the drivers door...what does a guy do when his door gets ruined...jump through hoops for the DMV or Hwy patrol? Rediculous.
Which brings up another issue...how is Legacy Titling their trucks.....with the front cab data tag or the rear one? I mean there's obviously 2 Data tags I hope since it's a felony to remove a tag.....right???
Sheesh.
Folks need to get a life.
