I'm working on starting a side business doing media blasting. After speaking with the media distributor, my plan is to primarily use crushed glass for paint and rust removal. Sand is rarely used anymore due to the silica content (silicosis). Soda is supposed to be good for removing paint and cleaning parts, but will not remove rust (rust is attacked secondarily with a wire wheel or different media). Also, regarding your comment about sand being too aggressive - I have used fine sifted sand in the past and it worked well on truck frames and did not leave too bad of a finish. But, fine Black Beauty is coarser than fine sand.
