Hey guys,

I am at a bit of a loss at this point. I finally got the carburetor issue sorted by dropping down to a 600 cfm Edelbrock but now I am still having erratic idle and backfire issues so I am convinced that is is the HEI now.

Here are the symptoms and keep in mind that this distributor was running just fine not that long ago:

Erratic/rough idle
Backfiring
Acts like spark jump between wires

What I have done already:

New plugs/wires
Cap is in good shape and has clean contacts as does the rotor
Timing is spot on at 8° BTDC w/o vac advance hooked up (I did notice that it seems like there is a pulsing spark...like #1 is firing repeatedly in a few ms)
Separated all of the wires and checked routing...I cant hear or feel any arcing between wires and didn't see any in the dark either.

I'm starting to wonder if the dwell is way off somehow. I have a different dist. I'm going to try tonight before I load up for tomorrows parade.

Thanks!!!
