When I had my lock rings re-plated, I happened to choose a plating facility owned by an ex NASA engineer with a doctorate in metallurgy. I asked him about the danger of embrittlement in the re-plating process. He explained to me that the danger of embrittlement actually comes as a byproduct of rust.

Like Truckdog said, there are no written specifications that will lead you through evaluating your rings. However, in my case, those rings that were covered in heavy rust were not reused. NOS rings can be gotten for $25.00. Replacing questionable rings is cheap insurance against potential disaster. In the end it comes down to a little knowledge, a lot of common sense, and listening to that little voice inside.
