Usually a small recess in the ring, close to the split where it fits against the rim - you need a lever that will fit in there and I also use a flat tire iron. The narrow ended lever goes in the slot and you start to lever the ring away from the rim, get the tire iron under the ring and lever it out enough so the edge pops over the edge of the rim. Work your way around and the ring comes off. They look a bit like a giant spring washer when they come off. Don't lever it too far out from the rim and take your time. When you put it back on, I usually start one end into the right spot and work around it with a heavy rubber mallet.
