Felt is just a fiber that has been matted together. Wool is often used for felt, but I don't actually know what fiber is used for the FFPW, although it is probably wool. I doubt they were using any synthetics back then.
When I thought I needed some washers, I planned to buy some felt from a fabric store and cut some washers. I don't remember that the felt serves any purpose other than to act as a seal. So, the thickness of the felt is probably the most important factor.
