If you sell your dream; you die. With some it is indeed hoarding which is an aberration all its own. With many others it's a question of giving up on a dream long held, of someday driving that prized car or truck down the blvd. and all the acclaim that comes with a perfectly completed restoration. Selling a long beloved vehicle is tantamount to admitting that it will never be restored under their ownership.
I'm no psychologist but I have discussed this with friends who are. The root cause is emotional attachment to the object in question. A car may be a representation of a link to a deceased parent or other loved one who was in some way associated with the vehicle. Severing that connection can be traumatic. Some of the other guys here who are in law enforcement can testify that these people can be quite dangerous during a court ordered clean-up. I saw one elderly man go after a tow truck driver with an axe.
It doesn't mean that these cars are un-buyable, but you have to approach the situation with a bit of care.
