Since you mentioned that all you need is enough charge to start the vehicle, I think it's worth pointing out that most automotive charging systems, especially on the old rigs, are really brutal on the batteries compared to all the fancy "automatic" stuff that the electronified chargers try to do. The new vehicle charging systems are pretty good at supplying a constant voltage, usually well above the 13.8V float level, but they don't attempt to do any bulk vs float or quick vs tapered cleverness. On older vehicles, the voltage and current jump all over the place, and yet still the battery manages to get charged.
