She may be way more aware than it looks. I know a woman who everybody thought was a "vegetable" for the better part of a year, but she was totally conscious and could hear everything people were saying, much of which was pretty bad. She just couldn't move or talk. She eventually came out of it and is fine now. Your wife is very lucky to have you standing by her.
