70 watts was medium on that particular service. There were a 140 watt SCP's and Motorola made 150 watt Motracs.
If you crack that SCP open you'll find tube type audio circuits and a partially transistorized x-mitter. It's what made them so popular as repeaters for 2meter.
Most new 2meter repeaters are digital and ready to go out of the box. There are still a couple in the Pasadena area that are old tube type public safety radios converted to repeater duty. They get replacement tubes from Russia. You can really tell the difference in the audio quality.
