open knuckle or closed - w200

Hi PW guys.
I had a question about the stock closed knuckle d44 that many PW came with. The lack of power steering has always been a pain - but the turning radius is also a bummer.
I was thinking to put an open knuckle in to replace the original. Then I thought - #1 Which axle would be best...who is the donor..and then #2 will the stock steering gear box fail if I get more turn out of the open knuckle.(are the internals of the stock gear box able to push farther than normal - safely.

Any wisdom on this issue would be readily consumed. Thanks!
