The Slant Six became a legend for its endurance, but for a few brief, shining moments, it was a true performance engine as well.

Nicknamed for its 30° slant when installed, the slant six had a better mixture of power and economy than contemporary GM and Ford straight-sixes. The 30° slant came about becuase it had to fit under the compact, low-slung Valiant’s hood; it made room for efficient manifolds, which may be why they kept the slant when it was used in bigger cars and trucks.
