I've not seen it for street pavement (probably wouldn't last long in the Northwest) but rather common for very tough industrial floors in the old days. Usually full-size 2x4s cut in chunks and set on end. The "Center House" at the Seattle Center, which is now sort of a food court and arcade, was built as the National Guard Armory as a WPA make-work project, and it still has a section of the original end-grain clear doug fir floor which they use as a dance floor today.
