Maybe not exactly your problem, but a friend of mine had a friend (yeah, I know), an older woman who had something I think they called excessive pressure in one "ventricle" of her brain. Before they found that, she was having various memory and mood problems, couldn't think straight, and generally she and everyone else thought she was getting Alzheimer's or something. But it turned out it was all due to this brain pressure thing and once they put in the drain all her mental troubles stopped and she was as good as ever. I don't know if there were side effects, but in that case it was definitely almost a miracle.
