Your comment "I can't over-emphasize how much engineering goes into the design of just about any part of a modern vehicle" is from my own experience in the current Automotive Design business, isn't totally true.

There has been a lot of Engineering lost in the industry, and a lot of Design (esthetics, etc...) added. Very often it became pick what worked on previous vehicles and adapt it to the next one.

Their was some moves to put more Engineering back in when I left through some flavor of the day improvement programs, but I'm sure the bean counters and platform managers started complaining about the cost, and curtailed it back.

Granted their are some areas that they still do some good Engineering, but not across the board in today's vehicles.

I'd agree though that if you want a modern higher speed truck, the appropriate donor with all the necessary engineered components is the best route.
