I traveled Route 66 in the '50s with my dad. It was, as most of his road trips were, a whirlwind drive. We only stopped when we needed fuel for the De Soto he was driving. What could have been a memorable event turned out to be a memorable event. Only in a different way. Missouri was a trip. We stopped in a little place where the locals sat on a little porch on the only fuel pump in town. Well, it was the only building in the town. Ended up in Granite City, Ill., next door to TGP.
