That sounds like the one school bus I'd want to ride in!

On a more realistic vein the amount of money you have to spend will determine what doors are open.

Paul's 10K number is IMO optimistic if you can find the right deals, otherwise the problem with diesel is the cost. The Cummins dealer will sell you a new 4.5L ISB but it would probably eat that $10k figure and ask for more, and that's just the motor.

A forum or two ago I posted a link to the Banks web site where they are advertising a new engine swap package based off the 3L diesel that Dodge/Jeep is using in their new vehicles. Comes with tranny and transfer case, plus all the wiring but no cost numbers yet. It would probably be a nice setup for something like that bus though.

IMO I rebuilt and upgraded my stock axles because I wasn't ready to tackle the complexities of swapping in different ones and designing new steering setups and all that came with it. But outside of that there is little other than the BUDD look to justify re-using them in a re-power situation. Neither cost nor capability is better than using something newer, either re-built and upgraded, or straight up custom ordered. If I ever get mine done and decide to start a phase two restoration, it would probably be to replace the axles and upgrade the steering.

Good luck.
