I have read most of these comments and the comparison of trade unions, welders, pipe fitters, carpenters, etc are not the same unions for factory unions, GM, Ford etc. I have worked for a trade union, use to be a meat cutter, and have worked at a factory union, Alcoa, my dad was a union carpenter for his life. When you join a trade union you have an apprentiship, when you join a company that is union you do not have the same, that being said your at the top of the food chain the day you are hired with no formal training and your making the same money as the next guy that has been there for 30 years and that is not the same as the trades as you are stepped up as you learn and go thru the appretiship. Trade unions are much more disciplined than are company that has a union, if you not cutting the mustard your sent back to the union hall and get on the list for another job, if your not cutting the mustard at Gm your just pissing your co workers off and the management and still collecting the check at the end of the week. I retired at a non union company but the company hired the union trades to do large jobs on site and there were union trade guys that had just as much time at the plant as me. Trade unions pay for their own retirement from high union dues and must keep on their game in order to save up for their pensions where as the company unions get their retirement from the company, so you see that is why there are people saying that unions have ruined this country and those that are union proud and say have built this country, both are right in my opinion but it is like comparing apples to onions they are not the same at all. I have seen many union workers at Alcoa that I would not hire to mow my yard because I would give them money for gas for the mower and when I get home I'd have an empty gas can and the yard would not be mowed, yet I have not seen hardly any union trade workers that would do the same, they have the discipline and pride of doing the job right. It just is not the same culture for sure. Fleabag!!
