Gary, great idea. The correct name for the part is adjustable contactor because it can be retarded for starting to prevent kick back.
The other part is not so much a voltage regulator but a current relay. The voltage on most applications is controlled by a third brush on the generator commutator that can be rotated.
I better send you a picture of my 49 for you to do. It is a pretty rare bike in that there is no aftermarket re pop stuff on it.
