That's fascinating, because I was just thinking about asking my chemist friend if that would work to remove broken off screw stubs in M-series brake light housings. The screws get rusted into the aluminum and there doesn't seem to be any good way to get them out. If nitric acid will dissolve the iron without hurting the aluminum, that would be really slick. With a light housing, you wouldn't even need to build the clay dam, but just pour enough acid into the housing to cover the screw stub. I wonder how strong the acid should be and whether it should be heated.
