Maybe I'm calling it the wrong thing. There are pieces that go under the bottom side of the bed ways, front and back, with adjustment screw to take up the slack so there's no up and down movement in the carriage. They're not taped like gibs, but just bars with set screws under them. One sector of the front piece is separate and serves as the carriage lock as you describe. I mainly want to get this apart so I can thoroughly clean out the rust and oil crud from both pieces. This particular carriage has its own oil sump and built-in oil pump with tubing to lubricate the ways and the lead screws, and it's pretty grungy. The machine was used in at least two production shops before I got it, but if I get it cleaned up and working smoothly, it should stay that way forever for what little I'll use it. It would just be nice to start with all the chips and congealed oil cleaned out.
