I had to replace the starter and flywheel that sounded similar. The electric solenoid was flaky, but the mismatch in pinion and ring gears did it in. When I got it you had about three spots on the flywheel where the ring hadn't been ground flat. You had to be lucky to be on one of the three spots and have the engine start first crank. If not go out and spin the fan to get to a good spot. After a couple of weeks of this I didn't have any more good spots, hence the new starter and flywheel. I went back to the original foot pedal starter.
