The Red wire from the starter is the initial from battery power supply, while the black wire is where the power is from while the truck is running and the generator charging.
The gauges do draw power through the amp gauge before the truck runs and starts charging.
If you think it's the AMP gauge, you can run a jumper from the battery to the black wire on the regulator, this bypasses the AMP gauge..
