Filters that are tight in those housings will filter better than one that is too loose in the housing.
I order Baldwin filters by the case. I have not had the problems with those fitting as I did with the newer incorrectly sized NAPA filters. I had to force the later NAPA filters I had into the canister with a hammer handle. Now. If Baldwin has recently switched to the same three vendors that Wix and Napa use, then we have problems.
I would never resort to unwrapping the cover and removing material. The possibility exists of causing the filter to fit the canister to loosely or unevenly, then dirty oil will find the path of least resistance and they will not function as designed.
