I don't mess around anymore. I automatically tac weld two 5/16" nuts to the seal face. Then use a puller with 5/16" bolts threaded into the nuts and pushing off the pinion shaft with the main screw. I also now tac the nuts to any new seals I install. You just have to be fast with the welding so you don't hurt the new seal.
