For several years, up until about a year ago, I was having a problem with the 218 in my WDX. It would run okay until I went into fourth gear. Then it would act like it was losing power, and I couldn't get any speed out of it. For a long time I was thinking that I had a fuel problem, i.e. carburetor problem. Then one day a year ago I checked the timing with a timing light. Come to find out the timing was advanced 30+ degrees. Dailed it down to 0 (TDC) and boy what a difference. She just wants to run now.
218 flathead with 4.89 ring & pinion gears and all wheel disc brakes. Flat out the truck tops out at about 50 mph, which is fine for me. This is my current daily driver. Fuel mileage sucks, but it doesn't burn the oil that the 4.0 V6 in my Aerostar with bad valves was getting (about 400 to 600 miles to a quart).
