Nick, my wyfe and I use a graying stain for our bee hives, it is water based and will turn gray after it rains on it, and then dries by the sun. the more cycles, the darker it gets, it does not have a blackish color, it is pure gray! just gets darker with time. I guess if you wanted it to stop aging you could put a coat of varnish on it to stop the process. it is a gorgous gray, antique look. Dave
