Smoother it would be. The Clark 280VO has a 5th of 0.799, same as mine with Hercules and 4.89s and 37s. He must run out of rpms long before running out of power. If I were him I'd be looking at one of those $770 Dannel (sp?) overdrives (discussed a month or two ago) with 0.78 ratio to drop 70 mph rpms down from 2600 to 2000 or so. That would probably raise his mpg by about 6-7% (1-1.5 mpg) and really drop noise.
