As Steve says here, wire feed doesn't penetrate as readily as other methods do.

As an aside but certainly related, I once read in one of aviation mags, if I recall correctly EAA's Sport Aviation, an aircraft inspector relating that he always recommends that home-builders use oxy-acetylene to weld. While the mig welders may produce a nicer looking weld with less practice/experience, they are likely to be weaker. According to him, gas welding is the easiest method to use when the highest priority of the weld is to be structurally sound. I personally like gas welding, it's just a much slower process for me than stick or mig welding. I've not had the chance to mess around with TIG, but a friend of mine who has, raves about it.
