But after a lot of wasted effort because it read 11.7 when the voltage was really 12, just sitting, and 13.6 when the voltage was really 14.0, when charging, I decided to investigate and found out how badly off some of them are. Those numbers make the difference between a charging system working perfectly and one barely working at all. And that's with a good battery in them. Out of the five I tested, that one was the worst, but none was very good.

Now that they're (temporarily?) calibrated, I'll still keep them strewn around the place, like pens and tape measures, but as soon as I get a reading that doesn't seem right, I'll double check with a better meter. The higher end Harbor Freight ones that sell for $20-$30 are definitely better in terms of accuracy, but they still go berserk on certain noisy signals that the Fluke handles just fine.
